Visit the castle ruins in Valkenburg

Anyone visiting Valkenburg cannot miss the Castle Ruins. Towering high above the town are the remains of the only hilltop castle in the Netherlands. The castle was built in the eleventh century and grew into an imposing defensive structure over the centuries that followed. It was destroyed and rebuilt several times due to wars and sieges, until it was finally destroyed in 1672 on the orders of Stadtholder William III. What remains are impressive walls and towers that still serve as a tangible reminder of Valkenburg's rich past. A visit to the Castle Ruins is a journey back in time. Walking through the ruins, you will discover the Knight's Hall, the chapel, the keep, and other elements that once formed the heart of the castle. From the hill, you can also enjoy a magnificent view over Valkenburg and the Geul Valley. Underground, you will find a second world: the secret escape tunnels leading to the Velvet Cave. These mysterious tunnel systems tell their own stories and make the visit extra special.
