Discover the Municipal Cave in Valkenburg
Beneath the Cauberg in Valkenburg lies an impressive underground world: the Gemeentegrot. This extensive network of tunnels is one of the largest marl caves in the Netherlands and has a long and remarkable history. The tunnels were formed because marlstone was quarried for centuries for the construction of houses, churches, and fortifications in the region. What once began as a quarry grew into a network of tunnels stretching for kilometers beneath Valkenburg. Today, the Gemeentegrot is one of the city's most visited attractions and offers visitors a unique glimpse into the history of the Limburg marl landscape.

History of the cave
The Gemeentegrot was formed when workers extracted marlstone from the hills. This soft limestone was an important building material in South Limburg and was used for churches, houses, and city walls, among other things. The quarrying of the stone created an extensive network of tunnels beneath the Cauberg. Over the centuries, the cave was continuously expanded.
What can you see there
During a visit to the cave, you will discover kilometers of underground passages. Historical drawings, inscriptions, and marl sculptures created over the years can be seen in the walls. Some drawings date back to the time of the French occupation or the Second World War. These inscriptions tell stories about life in different periods of history.
Details
The Gemeentegrot is not only used for guided tours. In the winter, one of the most famous Christmas markets in the Netherlands takes place here. The passages are then atmospherically lit and filled with stalls, music, and Christmas decorations. Events and exhibitions are also regularly organized in the cave.
Practical information
The entrance to the Gemeentegrot is located at the foot of the Cauberg in Valkenburg. Visitors can explore the cave during a guided tour or by taking a small train that runs through the passages. A visit to the cave is often combined with other attractions in the center of Valkenburg.
