Throughout the centuries, the cave has served various functions, including as a hiding place during wars and as a secret passage beneath the castle. Today, the Velvet Cave is one of Valkenburg's most impressive attractions. History and significance
The Velvet Cave was formed in the Middle Ages through the quarrying of marlstone. This soft limestone was used for the construction of churches, houses, and fortifications. Over the centuries, the tunnel system grew into an extensive network beneath Valkenburg. During the Second World War, the cave was used as a shelter and storage space.

Visitors discover centuries-old wall drawings and inscriptions in the cave's passages. During a guided tour, stories are told about knights, secret escape tunnels, and the history of Valkenburg. Furthermore, a famous Christmas market takes place here during the winter period.
